Assignment 3: Upcycling

This laptop case is made out of plastic bags. I choose rice bag for the base material because it is strong and durable. I turned the cover inside out for 2 reasons: to get rid of the label and get nice red and white pattern, and the label material smoother than inside so it won’t scratch the laptop. The rice bag itself is already a durable material, I decided not to cut it and use this maximum. I sew the opened part and cut in the middle to put lap top. The top part became a lid. Normal cotton string was too weak to hold bags in position, so I used linen string, which used for sewing rice package bag.

For padding, I stuffed light plastic bags you can get it from Colse and grocery shopping because they are soft and light. For the cover of the padding, I used stronger plastic bag that you can get from clothes shopping. They often come with good designs and photo, so put the whole shopping bag inside, so it would looks like a poster when you open it. I could have done it for the outside cover, but I still wanted to keep the quality of the rice bag, and it was a lot stronger than shopping bag, I padded inside the pocket back part protection. I used Velcro to hold the lid in place.

  1. I love your product...it well executed..and it looks neat even though u sew it urself...my only concern is i dont think the material might protect the laptop when it's fall...overall, good job!

  2. It looks neat and actually like a laptop case- great job- I guess you can come up with lots of different combination mesh of graphics with plastic bags as a medium. But I guess how long will it last before the weight of the laptop begins to tell

  3. its very interesting to see how you have used the most unrecyclable material into something so trendy! your lap top case is a very successfully product and i think you can add more value to it if you trun it into a shoulder bag as well, maybe thinking about adding strips or handles.

  4. I think it is good to make use of plastic bag because it is really a big waste. And there are no further harm to the enviornment when you are making the product. But i touch it at class and found it too thin. I think if you think more about making it shakeproof, it will be better.

  5. As others had commented above, I like how you used unrecyclable material. The design is very nice as well. However I'm also concerned about how long it will last.

  6. I like the ricebag idea as with most families, its thrown out. Also adding with the plastic bags as padding is a great idea. My only concern is the durability of the product. Other than that well done!

  7. I think this is an innovative idea to re-use plastic bags, especially as they are a major contributor to environmental pollution. I agree with my peers that the only concern would be the durability and sustainability of the product. Perhaps some sort of protective cover to prevent the fading of the outer plastic bag graphic could be added into the design? Overall great choice of materials and execution of your concept.
