Assignment 3: Upcycling

This laptop case is made out of plastic bags. I choose rice bag for the base material because it is strong and durable. I turned the cover inside out for 2 reasons: to get rid of the label and get nice red and white pattern, and the label material smoother than inside so it won’t scratch the laptop. The rice bag itself is already a durable material, I decided not to cut it and use this maximum. I sew the opened part and cut in the middle to put lap top. The top part became a lid. Normal cotton string was too weak to hold bags in position, so I used linen string, which used for sewing rice package bag.

For padding, I stuffed light plastic bags you can get it from Colse and grocery shopping because they are soft and light. For the cover of the padding, I used stronger plastic bag that you can get from clothes shopping. They often come with good designs and photo, so put the whole shopping bag inside, so it would looks like a poster when you open it. I could have done it for the outside cover, but I still wanted to keep the quality of the rice bag, and it was a lot stronger than shopping bag, I padded inside the pocket back part protection. I used Velcro to hold the lid in place.

This card holder was inspired by origami. I have always been fascinating by japanese origami and  pop up books because you see the whole other world that you were not expected to see. When receivers are given the package, they do not need to assemble it themselves, it comes pre-assembled. The receivers interact with this by 'opening' it. However i put extra straps and instruction how to make the holder so the receivers understands the basic principles and make it into the size they like whenever they want to. 

This will appeal to everyone. You can put business card, bus card, coupons, id and even photos. They are made out of thick paper and cardboard because it needed to be fold many times but it still has to keel its shape. Additionally,  it will be safe for children and they can even play with this. 

ROSS LOVEGROVE: THE POWER AND BEAUTY OF ORGANIC DESING

He introduces himself as a ‘captain organic’ in the video because his work and principles based on organic shape. He get his inspiration from nature and apply them to everyday product. His water bottle design was a good example. I liked how he create ‘skin of water’ and capture the movement and texture of  something that is so clear and continually changing. Every bottle are different and they are designed to fit to everyone’s hands from baby to athletic. I think that is how it communicate with the people. It is for everyone, but because of the individual design, it is also very personal. I don’t know about cost for producing them, but if they are released, there will be people collecting the bottles just like they collects watches and bags.

 

Lovegorve’s products that were inspired by nature is amazing. They are very modern and simply beautiful. However there are already lot of designers who are inspired by organic shapes. I think what makes Lovegrove so special is, he take nature’s properties, not only just form and shape. He was the first person who made a chair out of magnesium.  Some reason that even came to me a shock. I was impressed how he adopt nature from the sctrach and melt into the design.

 

I found Ross Lovegrove was bit audacious and some of his designs out of trail such as 300 componet stick car. However I adore his work and how he translate the nature to everyday product.

My dad used to collect cup set so we always have more cups and saucers than we need. The problem was we ran out of space and I thought it would be good if we can stack the cups. That happened in the café that my parents own. The cups charges so much space and they were hard to stack because of the handle. So I designed this stackable cup set and tray. It will appeal to young people and a family who has children in primary and above. The whole point of having handle is to grab a cup drinking hot liquid. I get rid of the handle and made a holder made out of silicon so its easy to grab and also does not transfer the heat from the cup. When the cup is not being used, it can be used as a food container for nuts and lollies.
The container and the holder fits perfectly to the tray so it does not wobble when it is being carried but also it is easy to take out because they are getting narrower as it getting towards the bottom.
